It's worse when the food is bad - the curry rice and cai fan places seem to have started just heaping rice on your plate, and the quality of the rice is awful, broken and smelling of the sack. Here at least things were genuinely tasty, even if portions were larger than I think appropriate.
Even if I wasn't interested in Singapore food, the writing alone would be entrancing

But perhaps you mean "schmaltz" (rendered chicken/goose fat) rather than "schmutz"(dirt)? Or perhaps not..

I think schmutz is a highly informal term, but it’s definitely something other than schmaltz!
