Back in February, I wrote a piece for Vittles on the history of hawker centres in Singapore, which contained the line “hawker centres are infrastructure.” We were trying to cover 60 years of warp-speed development in 3000 words, and I didn’t have room to go much deeper into the implications of this idea, but it stuck with me, because sometimes when you write a thing, you know it to be true.
